Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital was established as one of the seven one hundred bedded hospitals planned by Govt. of NCT of Delhi during Sixth five year plan under special component plan with the objective to provide medical facilities to nearby inhabitants of J.J. Clusters and resettlement colonies such as Mangol Puri, Sultan Puri, Nangloi, Nihal vihar, Kanjhawala, Begumpur etc.
The Hospital also caters to the most underprivileged section of the society of West and North West Delhi mainly the Assembly constituencies Mundka, Sultanpuri, Kirari, Sultanpurmajra, Punjabi Bagh, PachimVihar, Rohini, Kanjhwala, Nangloi Jat, and Mangol Puri. Patients for general treatment come from other areas of Delhi, Haryana, UP and Bihar. Round the clock emergency services along with Labour Room, ICU, Nursery Services etc. were also made functional from 1998-99.
Though the OPD services were started in 1986 but fullfledged IPD services with full capacity of 100 beds was started in the year 1994. Later on the hospital was upgraded to 300 bedded hospital after construction of additional MCH block (Maternity and Child block) and emergency block in year 2006. In September 2025 an additional 362 bedded Trauma Block was inaugurated which was made operational with 60 Trauma beds and 56 disaster beds.
Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital is a 662-bedded Multi-speciality hospital, including a 362-bedded newly inaugurated Trauma Centre. At present, 416 beds (including 56 disaster beds) are functional. The bed distribution is as follow:-
